Arusha Area Overview

Arusha is situated on the southern slopes of Mount Meru in northern Tanzania, at an elevation of approximately 1,400 m (4,600 ft). It is the principal gateway to Tanzania’s northern safari circuit and a common starting point for journeys to Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro, and the Serengeti, as well as climbs of Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru. Its elevation keeps the climate relatively mild despite its proximity to the equator, with warm days and cooler nights throughout much of the year and distinct wet and dry seasons.

Day 4 - Hadza Activities and Dorobo Pioneer Camp image

Immersive Hadza Cultural Experience in Yaeda Valley

Hadza Activities

A visit to the Yaeda Valley focuses on learning about and from the Hadza directly. This is a very special immersion experience in which you will have the opportunity to witness and participate in the Hadza's daily activities. The activities are structured but not staged and will vary depending on which Hadza camp, season, and food availability. The landscape is a mosaic of open valley grasslands, bush, baobab, and rocky ridges. Foraging: Walk to a Hadza Camp to see their shelters and how they live. Walk with the women as they gather tubers, berries, and other foods. Men will also join the foraging walk but will be searching for honey and hunting. Hunting: Guests can join an early morning hunt with a Hadza hunter that could include walking, stalking, or sitting in a blind waiting for wildlife to come into a water hole. Honey Foraging: Watching Hadza men find a hive and extract the honey is an experience that you won't forget. Dorobo Camp: Witness Hadza men and women making fire, arrows, beaded jewelry, and try your hand at shooting a Hadza bow at a target. The visit ends with a fireside chat, exchanging questions about each other’s cultures, telling stories, or witnessing Hadza song and dance.

Arrive in Karatu and Relax at Eileen's Trees Inn

transport icon

Travel to Karatu

You will arrive in the afternoon. Enjoy the pool, the bar and the spa.

Karatu Area Overview

Karatu is a ‘gateway’ town within easy reach of the iconic Ngorongoro Crater as well as the Lake Manyara National Park. The bustling town is a hub of activity in the fertile ‘Crater highlands,’ lush and verdant hillsides where tourists easily mingle with local artisans and tradespeople. Because of the volcanic soil the area is superb for agriculture, and as well as subsistence and commercial farmers there are a multitude of working coffee farms, some of which offer accommodation. Since the town is only 140 kms from Arusha, the area makes a great stop over for guests on the way to the crater, which is only some 20kms away on decent roads.

Travel Tips

Travel Tips image

Travel Tips

  1. Get Vaccinated & Pack Meds – Make sure your routine vaccinations are up to date, and talk to your doctor about malaria prevention. Bring bug spray with DEET, just in case.

  2. Respect Local Customs – Tanzania is culturally diverse, and many areas are conservative. Dress modestly, especially in villages or religious sites.

  3. Pack Layers – Safaris can be chilly in the morning and hot by afternoon. Layers will keep you comfortable throughout the day.

  4. Bring Cash – Credit cards aren’t widely accepted outside of major hotels. Bring U.S. dollars (newer bills preferred) and exchange for Tanzanian shillings when needed.

  5. Embrace “Pole Pole” – Life in Tanzania moves slowly (“pole pole” means “slowly slowly” in Swahili). Be patient and go with the flow.

  6. Stay Hydrated – The sun can be intense, so drink plenty of bottled or filtered water, especially on safari or hikes.

  7. Learn Basic Swahili – A few words like “Jambo” (Hello) and “Asante” (Thank you) go a long way in connecting with locals and showing respect.

general icon

A Few Useful Phrases

Here are a few useful Swahili phrases for your trip to Tanzania (with pronunciation help!):

  1. Jambo! (JAHM-boh) – Hello!

  2. Asante (ah-SAHN-teh) – Thank you

  3. Karibu (kah-REE-boo) – You’re welcome / Welcome

  4. Habari? (hah-BAH-ree?) – How are you?

  7. Samahani (sah-mah-HAH-nee) – Excuse me / Sorry

  8. Ndiyo (n-DEE-yoh) – Yes
